Iodoform Based Calcium Hydroxide Paste ( Metapex ) : an Aid for the Healing of Chronic Periapical Lesion

The main aim of endodontic therapy is that the infected tooth returns to healthy and functional state. Surgical intervention is recommended only after nonsurgical techniques have failed. Calcium hydroxide paste is recommended as intra canal medicament because of its antimicrobial properties, tissue dissolving ability, inhibition of tooth resorption and indication of tissue repair by hard tissue formation. This paper discusses a case of discoloured central incisor with large periapical lesion in which Iodoform based calcium hydroxide was used. There was an unintentional extrusion of paste during application. The patient was at a regular periodic follow up. The follow up showed that the extrusion of paste did not have any detrimental effect on periapical healing and aided in the resolution of the periapical lesion.
